The latest drop from prolific Tokyo based record label N.E.O.N is a whirlwind remix from Hong Kong producer and DJ, Hallex M.
‘Njengengoma’, which translates as ‘Like a song’ in the Xhosa language of native South Africa, embodies the sonic ethos behind STUDIO
APARTMENT’s music, and here Hallex M takes this earthy palette of sounds and reinvents and sculpts them with his stellar remixing abilities.
Continuing in the string of releases from artists across the globe, Hallex M delivers the next instalment for N.E.O.N, a deep, brooding, and atmospheric reworking, taking TOSHI’s engrossing vocal performance and delivering a remarkable new backdrop.
Complex interlocking rhythmic passages delight the upper frequencies, while a steady 4/4 kick drum rolls out across the expanse of the song. Delicate touches of harmonics layer up across the first half of the track; a constant swell of bass notes and subdued chord stabs that allow for
the vocals and percussion elements to shine through.
Breaking away at the halfway mark, wandering synthesizers wind their way upwards through a supreme drop.
The suspension Hallex M crafts through his mature sound selection and dynamic chord progressions allow for his considered palate of sounds to unify in an exuberant show of musical wizardry.
Throughout Hallex M’s remarkable reimagination of STUDIO APARTMENT’s bold fusion of techno and South African folk song,
there is an interplay of delicate harmonies that bind this piece into something more than most remixes can ever hope to achieve.
It is minimalist musical composition in its raw form, reinterpreted for the dance floors and dusty festival mainstages.
A track for the glowing dusk or amber rising sun of the dawn alike.
